Monsoon season in Las Vegas can bring fast-moving storms, flash floods, dust storms and other hazards. Whether you are a longtime resident or new to the valley, preparation is key before severe weather strikes.

What is monsoon season?

Monsoon season arrives in the Southwest during the late summer. As the land heats up, humid air from the Pacific Ocean moves inland through Mexico and Arizona into Nevada. This moist air becomes unstable and develops into thunderstorms. In Southern Nevada, monsoon season typically lasts from late June to mid-September.

What are the dangers?

Thunderstorms fueled by monsoonal moisture can be powerful and unpredictable. They may cause:

  • Flash floods that are damaging and potentially deadly.
  • Lightning strikes that can be fatal and may spark wildfires, especially when storms produce dry lightning with little or no rain.
  • Dust storms from strong winds that reduce visibility and create respiratory issues.
  • Downbursts—intense downdrafts of rain and wind—that can cause damage similar to an EF-0 or EF-1 tornado.

How to stay safe

You can take steps to protect yourself, your family and your property before and during a storm:

  • Keep a well-stocked emergency kit at home and in your vehicle. Include water, food and supplies in case of power outages.
  • Monitor weather updates on TV, radio, online or through mobile apps such as the Nevada Emergency Preparedness app or the Flood Spot app.
  • Stay indoors if storms are in the area. If outside, seek shelter immediately.
  • Never drive through flooded roadways or enter flood channels and basins. Just six inches of moving water can knock down an adult, and 18 inches can carry away a vehicle.
