Breathing New Life Into A Long-Vacant Corner In Ward 3

Thoughtful reinvestment is turning uncertainty into momentum.

For years, the former Kmart at Nellis Boulevard and Bonanza Road stood as a reminder of a different chapter in East Las Vegas—its doors closed and its future uncertain.

Today, that same corner is transforming into a vibrant community destination, bringing new energy, services, and opportunity to Ward 3.

During a recent interview on Access City Council, Councilwoman Olivia Diaz shared how this long-vacant site is being revitalized and why the change matters for residents and families across the east side.

From Vacancy To Vitality

When the K-mart shuttered, many residents wondered what would happen to such a large commercial space. Over time, the area lacked the activity and convenience that neighborhood shopping centers provide.

Now, thoughtful reinvestment is turning that uncertainty into momentum. The redevelopment has introduced La Bonita Supermarkets, along with additional retailers such as Ross and Five Below, creating a renewed commercial hub that had not been seen there for years.

This mix of everyday essentials, affordable shopping, and fresh food access is helping reactivate the corridor and restore a sense of neighborhood convenience.

Why La Bonita Matters To The Community

For many families, La Bonita is more than a grocery store—it’s a place that reflects culture, connection and daily life.

Councilwoman Diaz described the store’s wide selection of fresh foods, prepared dishes, juices, and a full meat market as a meaningful resource for local households, especially busy parents looking for convenient, quality options close to home.

The arrival of a flagship location in Ward 3 represents both economic investment and community pride, signaling confidence in the neighborhood’s future.

A Personal Connection

The transformation also carries personal meaning.
Councilwoman Diaz shared that she participated in the ribbon-cutting of La Bonita’s very first, much smaller store years ago—long before serving on City Council—making this new chapter feel like a full-circle moment for both the business and the community it serves.

That continuity reflects something deeper about Ward 3:
growth rooted in long-standing relationships and local history.

What Revitalization Means for Ward 3

Reactivating long-vacant commercial spaces does more than fill empty buildings.

It can:

  • Improve access to fresh food and everyday goods
  • Bring jobs and economic activity to the neighborhood
  • Increase safety through active, well-used spaces
  • Restore community pride in once-quiet corridors

Projects like this demonstrate how targeted investment can strengthen neighborhoods while honoring the people who have called them home for generations.

Looking Ahead

As Ward 3 continues to grow, from expanded schools to new community events and revitalized business corridors, the renewed energy at Nellis and Bonanza stands as a visible sign of progress.

What was once a closed storefront is now a place where families shop, neighbors connect and opportunity returns.

And for East Las Vegas, that transformation represents something simple but powerful: a community moving forward—together.
