The city's Department of Public Safety has earned accreditation from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care by demonstrating compliance with NCCHC’s nationally recognized standards of care for correctional health services in jails. Accreditation recognizes the city jail’s commitment to providing quality health services for the incarcerated population.
To earn NCCHC accreditation, the city jail underwent a rigorous professional assessment. During the assessment, a team of experienced physicians and experts in correctional health care surveyed the facility for compliance with jail-specific standards in several areas such as patient care and treatment, health promotion, safety and disease prevention, governance and administration, personnel and training, special needs and medical-legal issues.
In addition to meeting rigorous health care standards, the city jail is dedicated to the overall well-being of both inmates and staff. The Department of Public Safety offers various programs to support inmate rehabilitation and wellness.

NCCHC grew out of a program begun at the American Medical Association in the 1970s. The standards are NCCHC’s recommended requirements for the proper management of a correctional health services delivery system. These standards have helped correctional facilities improve the health of their inmates and the communities to which they return, increase the efficiency of their health services delivery, strengthen their organizational effectiveness, and reduce their risk of adverse patient outcomes and legal judgments.
