Work as few as 15 hours per week.

Larry Hickey (pictured), at age 54 is a lifeguard and instructor at Pavilion Center Pool. Now that he is often at the pool, he has improved his health with more activity and exercise. "After a 25-plus year career working as a mortgage consultant, I found myself living a very sedentary lifestyle, sitting in front of computer morning, noon and night," said Hickey. "I needed a change! An occasional round of golf with clients was my only form of exercise. I was out of shape and knew of no other way to make a change that could help with improving my health and wellness. I was encouraged by people close to me in the fall of 2023 to focus on finding a "feel-good, part-time job."  I needed to find something that would get me out of the house, a job that would encourage wellness and a way to be of service to others! Today, I still have my growing mortgage consultant profession. However, on most early mornings I am at the pool. I started as a lifeguard, but my job now as pool manager at Pavilion Center Pool is to open the doors at 5 a.m. I manage a small staff of lifeguards and together we provide for the proper amount of lifeguard coverage for our current and future U.S.A. Olympians with the Nevada Sandpipers Swim Club, as well as my regular daily swimming local patrons! I now have experience working for the city of Las Vegas and as an American Red Cross-certified lifeguard and certified water safety instructor, I can teach people young and not so young the ability to swim. This job also has allowed me to become certified as a lifeguard instructor, so I am now able to teach and certify those who want to become lifeguards themselves."

Lifeguards are needed both for immediate start dates and for the summer season (mid-May through September). The city will hire about 50 lifeguards, 30 water safety instructors, several assistants and a couple pool managers. Apply here to be offered an interview time.

If you need lifeguard certification, there is no deadline to register as classes are held monthly and on-going. classes are also FREE with an immediate hire at the conclusion so long as completion requirements and pre-employment requirements have been met. To register, visit Pavilion Pool during business hours at 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive or visit Municipal Pool during business hours at 431 E. Bonanza Road, or register online here. For more information, contact Tammy Hawkins at 702.229.4725 or Dave Lund at 702.229.4773.
