Curfew Guide For Families: What Teens & Parents Need To Know This Summer

To help keep the community safe, the city of Las Vegas is reminding residents and visitors about curfew regulations for minors.

As summer kicks off and students begin their break, downtown Las Vegas is preparing for a busy season filled with events, nightlife and increased foot traffic. To help keep the community safe and maintain a welcoming atmosphere, the city of Las Vegas is reminding residents and visitors about curfew regulations currently in place for minors — especially in the Fremont Street area.

Citywide Curfew
Las Vegas Municipal Code § 10.54.010 states that it is unlawful for any minor under the age of 18 who is not accompanied by a parent, guardian or other adult person having legal care, custody or control, and who is not engaged in any lawful occupation or on lawful business, to loiter, idle, wander, stroll or be in or upon any public streets, avenues, alleys or other public places in the city during the following hours:

  • During summer vacation and all school holidays (as defined by the Clark County School District): 12 to 5 a.m.
  • During the regular school year: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 12 to 5 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Enhanced Curfew Fremont Street Experience Area
Las Vegas Municipal Code § 10.54.015 states that in the specific Fremont Street Entertainment District (the area generally bordered by Main Street, Stewart Avenue, Maryland Parkway and Bridger Avenue, notwithstanding the citywide rules, it is unlawful for any unaccompanied minor under 18 (not engaged in lawful occupation or business) to remain on public streets, sidewalks, parking lots, driveways or walkways in this area from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, legal holidays and from 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 5 a.m. on Jan. 1. These enhanced restrictions are designed to help manage larger crowds and promote a safer environment in one of the city’s busiest entertainment corridors. The Fremont Street area attracts large crowds throughout the summer, especially during weekends, concerts and special events. With a high concentration of nightlife venues, alcohol-serving establishments and late-night activity, curfew regulations are intended to help reduce incidents and maintain a safe environment for everyone visiting downtown.

Important Exception for Special Events
The enhanced 9 p.m. curfew in the Fremont Street area does not apply to special events permitted by the city under Title 12 of the Municipal Code if the special event permit specifically states that § 10.54.015 does not apply. In those cases, only the citywide curfew applies. Fremont Street Experience frequently obtains such permits for concerts, major weekends and other large events, so the stricter 9 p.m. rule may be suspended for certain permitted activities. These rules help manage large crowds and promote safety in one of the city’s busiest entertainment corridors. Officials anticipate increased enforcement during popular summer events.

Possible Consequences for Violations
Youth found violating curfew regulations may be stopped by law enforcement monitoring the area. Possible consequences may include:

  • Receiving a citation (with fines up to $300 for the first violation and up to $1,000 for repeated violations)
  • Being escorted out of the restricted area
  • Being detained on site until a parent or guardian can be contacted
  • Being detained in juvenile detention
  • It is unlawful for parents, guardians or other persons having legal custody of any minor under 18 to allow or permit the minor to violate the curfew regulations (Las Vegas Municipal Code § 10.54.020). Punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 or not more than 6 months in jail.

The city’s focus remains on education, awareness and prevention while supporting overall public safety downtown.

Helpful Reminders for Teens Planning to Visit the Fremont Street Area This Summer

  • Plan rides home before midnight (citywide summer curfew) — or before 9 p.m. in the Fremont Street area on Fridays, Saturdays or holidays unless a special event permit has waived the enhanced curfew
  • Stay with friends and communicate plans with parents or guardians
  • If you want to remain in the area later, make sure a parent or guardian is present

How Parents and Guardians May Help

  • Know your teen’s plans and location
  • Set clear expectations about curfew times (and check whether any event you’re attending has a special permit that changes the rules)
  • Consider accompanying your teen to nighttime events or activities downtown

Summer Events with Higher Enforcement Presence
Several major summer events are expected to bring increased crowds and enforcement to the downtown area, including:

  • First Friday Las Vegas
  • Concerts and live entertainment events
  • Holiday weekends and special downtown celebrations
