The Las Vegas City Council, at its Sept. 17, 2025 meeting, voted to move forward with a study to determine if a new Redevelopment Area in East Las Vegas would be viable. The city has two existing Redevelopment Areas that have increased economic opportunities, helped to supprt existing businesses and residents and improved public transit and housing.

The study is just getting started and there are several next steps that will come in the futuire including:

  • Proposing a designated area for evaluation
  • Conduct a blight study
  • Conduct neighborhood outreach and public meetings
  • Develop a preliminary redevelopment plan
  • Draft an ordinance for approval by the Planning Commission, Redevelopment Agency and the City Council.

The Redevelopment Agency (RDA) was created in 1986 to revitalize downtown Las Vegas and the surrounding aging commercial districts. The RDA works with developers, property owners and the community to recruit businesses, create new jobs, eliminate blight and diversify our economy. Funding for the RDA is obtained exclusively from new property tax revenue generated through higher property values and new construction within the city's two Redevelopment Areas. This is called tax increment. Although the RDA is legally a separate entity from the city of Las Vegas, city council members sit on its board and approve projects, contracts and incentive programs.
