The Explorer Program provides educational
training for young adults on the purposes,
mission and objectives of law enforcement.
The program provides career orientation
experiences, leadership opportunities and
community service activities. The primary
goals of the program are to help young adults
choose a career path within law enforcement
and to challenge them to become responsible
citizens of their communities and the nation.
The primary goals of the Law Enforcement Explorer Program includes:
- Career Path Exploration: The program helps young adults explore potential career paths within law enforcement, guiding them through the various roles and responsibilities within the field.

Competition and Skills Development
Explorers compete in events hosted by
several different police agencies around the
nation. Explorers are given the opportunity to
test their skills in real life situations including:
traffic stops, building searches, physical
fitness and marksmanship. The events are
held both in daylight and night time scenarios.
The events are designed to test the strengths
and limitations of each Explorer’s intelligence,
personality, demeanor and physical abilities.
Success in competition relies on dedication
and teamwork.
Ride-Along/Sit-Along Opportunities
After completing the Explorer Academy, participants have the opportunity to further their learning through ride-alongs with police officers or sit-alongs with dispatchers. These experiences provide firsthand exposure to the daily routines and challenges faced by law enforcement professionals in the field.
Program Requirements
To join the Law Enforcement Explorer Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be at least 15 ½-years-old.
- Complete an interest form and undergo a background investigation.
- Maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA (C average) in school.
