Despite Las Vegas’ arid reputation, the city is prone to flash flooding. Unlike flooding in other areas of the country (which results from steady, long stretches of rain), flooding in Las Vegas typically results from sudden storms that dump a lot of rain in a short amount of time.
The city’s hard, dry soil doesn’t absorb water quickly. Pavement and buildings also reduce natural drainage.
There are steps you can take to prepare for flooding events:
Monitor the Weather
- Subscribe to weather alerts from the National Weather Service or download the Southern Nevada Community Preparedness App to receive alerts about weather in your area.
- Be mindful of storms in your area. If heavy rain is occurring nearby, water runoff could flow downstream to your location.
Stay Safe on the Road
Never drive through flooded roads. Six inches of water can stall a vehicle, and twelve inches can move a vehicle. Turn around, don’t drown.
Avoid washes and underpasses, which can turn into flowing rivers or deep ponds when heavy rain occurs.
Prepare Your Home
Clear gutters and drains ahead of stormy weather. Clogged gutters and drains can result in water build-up.
Keep an updated emergency kit in your home, your vehicle, and your place of work (if possible) that includes flashlights, batteries, water, medications, and copies of important documents.
Review your insurance. Standard homeowner’s policies typically do not include flood coverage.
Familiarize yourself with sandbag locations around the valley.
During a Flood
During a flood, take the following precautions:
- Seek higher ground immediately.
- Avoid walking or driving through moving water.
- Keep children and pets away from floodwater.
- Follow official guidance from local agencies, including Clark County Regional Flood Control District, City of Las Vegas Emergency Management, and local law enforcement.
- Report hazardous conditions if safe to do so.
After a Flood
After a flood has occurred, avoid entering flooded buildings until they’ve been inspected. Photograph any damage for insurance. Throw away contaminated food and supplies. Dry out your home quickly to prevent mold. Use caution around damaged electrical systems or appliances.
