Green Pool Health Hazards

Keeping pools clean and properly maintained helps protect neighborhoods from preventable health and safety risks and contributes to a safer community for our city.

Neglected or “green” swimming pools are more than just an eyesore in Southern Nevada neighborhoods. These stagnant pools can pose serious health and safety risks to residents, especially during the warmer months when mosquito activity increases across Las Vegas.

When pools are left untreated, the water becomes an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. A single neglected pool can produce thousands, or even millions, of mosquitoes in a short period of time. Mosquitoes in Southern Nevada have been linked to the spread of West Nile virus, a potentially serious illness that can affect both humans and animals.

Green pools can also become dangerous drowning hazards, particularly at vacant or abandoned properties. Unsecured pools may attract children or trespassers who are unaware of the dangers hidden beneath murky water. Poor visibility in green pools can make it difficult to see the depth of the water, debris or someone in distress.

Residents are encouraged to report stagnant or polluted pools as soon as possible so the issue can be addressed before it worsens. The city’s Code Enforcement Division works to investigate complaints and ensure hazardous pools are treated or pumped when necessary.

Property owners who fail to maintain their pools may face financial penalties. Noncompliance can result in a $350 pool pumping fee and a $120 failed inspection fee.

Community members who notice a neglected pool in their neighborhood can submit a complaint through the city’s website at lasvegasnevada.gov by selecting “Request Help With a Neighborhood Problem.” Complaints can also be made by calling 702-229-6615 or emailing CodeEnforcement@lasvegasnevada.gov.
