Summer is the peak season for grill fires. Each year more than 19,000 patients go to the emergency room because of injuries involving grills. To avoid grilling injuries, follow these safety tips:

  • Only use propane and charcoal grills outdoors. Grills should be placed at least 10 feet away from structures including homes, decks, railings and branches.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup.

When using a propane grill:

  • Make sure the lid is open before lighting it.
  • If you smell gas while cooking, get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.
  • If the flame goes out, turn everything off and wait at least five minutes before re-lighting.

When using a charcoal grill:

  • If you use a starter fluid, only use a charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • Let the coals completely cool before disposing them in a metal container. Do not use plastic or rubber containers.
