Las Vegas City Council will meet on Wednesday, July 7, at 9 a.m. Below are some agenda items that may be of interest. Get the agenda. Watch live at kclv.tv/live. 

Agenda Items 9, 10 & 49 – Annual Reviews of City Attorney and City AuditorCity Council will discuss the yearly performance of City Attorney Bryan K. Scott and City Auditor Radford K. Snelding. These reviews will be discussed in a closed session.

Agenda Item 12 – Rehabilitation of the Walker African American Museum and Research CenterCityCouncil will vote on an agreement to rehabilitate the Museum, located at 705 West Van Buren Avenue, and to ensure continued operations. The city received a Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) approved Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy Area (NRSA) designation for the Historic Westside. The NRSA has been incorporated into the 2020-2025 Consolidated Plan. The NRSA identifies key elements to be accomplished including supporting “existing historical, cultural and unique community elements”. This work aligns with the HUNDRED PLAN IN ACTION strategy to explore opportunities to celebrate Black culture and create additional historic and cultural destinations. The Walker African American Museum and Research has a collection of memorabilia that depicts the history of people of African descent, nationally and internationally with concentration in local Black History. The city recognizes the significant undertaking of restoring the museum through upgrades and modifications that leverage private resources and public financial assistance to ensure a safe, accessible reopening of the museum.

Agenda Item 13 – Vegas Roots Community Garden: City Council will vote on a grant agreement in alignment with one of the HUNDRED PLAN IN ACTION strategies to improve Historic Westside residents’ access to affordable, healthy food options, e.g. fruits and vegetables with the added benefit of unifying the community. Residents will be taught how to grow vegetables in a food desert and prepare nutritious meals from their crops at the Vegas Roots Community Garden, 715 N. Tonopah Drive.

Agenda Item 20 – Park and Trail Assistance Program: City Council will vote on an agreement with the Outside Las Vegas Foundation, effective July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022 which provides for the construction of a native habitat garden in a city park, oversight of the Volunteers in Parks (VIP) program and coordination of volunteer events and youth programming. This agreement expands on the initial agreement with Get Outdoors Nevada (GON) by adding six additional events for a total of 18 events per year, constructing a native habitat garden in a city park and coordinating youth programming activities.

Agenda Item 21 – Digitization of Historical Material: City Council will vote on an agreement for the costs associated with digitizing historical material stored at the city of Las Vegas’ Archives and Records Center. The center currently has a collection that includes approximately 116,000 photographs, negatives and slides depicting life in Las Vegas and Nevada that date from 1905 to the early 2000s. Costs include transportation to digitization center, digitization, pre and post-conversion storage space, and post-conversion file transfers.

Agenda Item 48 – Closed Session: A closed meeting will occur to allow City Council to receive information from the City Attorney about potential and existing litigation.

Agenda Item 58 – Las Vegas Healing Garden & New Volunteers in Parks Initiative: Report by Greg A. Weitzel, Director, Department of Parks and Recreation, and Rachel Bergren, Executive Director of Get Outdoors Nevada, on the volunteer activities at the Las Vegas Healing Garden, located at 1015 South Casino Center Boulevard, and a new Volunteers in Parks initiative, which is an engagement program of volunteers in parks throughout the city of Las Vegas parks system.

Agenda Item 59 – Abatement of Dangerous Building Code: Report by Kevin McOsker, Director of Building and Safety, and Vicki Ozuna, Code Enforcement Section Manager, regarding dangerous buildings requirements to demolish and abatement process. This presentation will highlight the Abatement of Dangerous Building Code adopted in 1995, which provides the criteria to assess damaged and dangerous buildings. It provides staff guidance to determine if a structure should be demolished or secured and the process to notify the property owner.

Agenda Item 60 – Innovation District: Report by Ryan Smith, Acting Director, Economic and Urban Development, and Michael Sherwood, Chief Innovation Officer, regarding an update on the activities pertaining to innovation, technology and start-ups within the Innovation District.

Agenda Item 61 – Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiative: Report by the Office of Community Services Staff regarding the efforts of Resolution R-52-2020, approved by City Council on November 18, 2020 to establish the City’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiative to increase opportunities for health, social and economic well-being of all Las Vegas residents.
