National Community Development Week is being recognized April 5-9, 2021. The objective of this week is to educate the community on the importance of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program and the HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) Program and their impact on the community.

The Community Development Program provides annual grants to states, counties and cities to provide decent and suitable living environments and economic opportunities. Every $1 of CDBG leverages another $4.09. Since 2005, CDBG has:

  • preserved over 1.25 million units of affordable housing since 2005
  • directly benefitted over 50 million people through CDBG-funded public improvements
  • created/retained 454,961 economic development jobs

The HOME Investment Partnerships Program provides grants to state and local governments to create affordable housing for low-income households. Every $1 of HOME leverages another $4.52. Since 1992, HOME has:

  • helped build and preserve over 1.33 million units of affordable housing
  • funded over 545,000 homebuyer units
  • created/retained 1.3 million jobs

The city of Las Vegas has benefitted immensely from these two programs. We receive approximately $5 million as our annual CDBG allocation and $2 million in HOME.

CDBG grant funds typically fund public service projects, housing rehabilitation programs and capital improvement projects. During this current fiscal year, funds have been allocated to the construction of the Courtyard Homeless Resource Center, Health & Wellness Center and the West Las Vegas Employment Center. Additionally, we are funding 11 non-profits to help provide services that focus on seniors, homeless and youth education programs:

  • Catholic Charities: Meals on Wheels
  • Clark County Public Education Foundation: Family Learning Program
  • Family Promise of Las Vegas: Family Housing & Stabilization Services
  • Foster Kinship: Kinship Navigator Program
  • Grant a Gift Autism Foundation: Autism Workforce Development Project (TeenWORKS)
  • Goodwill Industries of Southern Nevada: Employment Program for Battered Spouses
  • HELP of Southern Nevada: Shannon West Homeless Center
  • Jewish Family Service Agency: Senior Lifeline Case Management
  • Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth: Safe Place, Youth Outreach & Intervention Program
  • Salvation Army: The Career Center
