Protecting Seniors In Our Community

Legal Support and Resources for Older Adults

Caring for seniors is one of the most important ways we strengthen our community. Across Southern Nevada, leaders and partners are working together to ensure older adults have access to the support, protection and dignity they deserve.

Councilwoman Kara Kelley recently highlighted the work of the Southern Nevada Senior Law Program, an organization dedicated to providing free, high-quality legal services to residents age 60 and older. These services are available to seniors throughout Clark County and neighboring rural counties, helping older adults plan for the future and protect themselves from harm.

Why Legal Protection Matters For Seniors

Many seniors live on fixed incomes that allow them to meet daily needs but may not leave room for legal expenses like creating a will or establishing powers of attorney. Without these essential documents, families can face confusion, emotional stress, and unexpected financial burdens during medical emergencies or life transitions.

Through compassionate attorneys and educational workshops, the Senior Law Program helps older adults:

  • Create wills and trusts
  • Establish health care and financial powers of attorney
  • Understand estate planning decisions before a crisis occurs
  • Learn how to recognize scams, identity theft and elder abuse

These services empower seniors to make informed choices and maintain control over their future.

A Growing Need In Southern Nevada

The need for senior legal services continues to rise. In 2025 alone, the Senior Law Program provided direct legal assistance to more than 3,000 seniors and reached another 5,000 through education and outreach, including scam prevention and elder-abuse awareness.

Older adults are often targeted for fraud or exploitation—sometimes by strangers, and sometimes by trusted individuals. Legal guidance and early planning can prevent harm and help restore protection when exploitation occurs.

How Residents Can Help

Community members can support senior protection efforts by:

  • Encouraging older loved ones to complete legal planning documents
  • Learning to recognize signs of scams or exploitation
  • Volunteering professional skills or donating to trusted nonprofits
  • Sharing information about free legal resources with neighbors

When seniors are safe, informed, and supported, the entire community benefits.

Las Vegas is strongest when every generation is protected and respected.
