Stay Safe As Las Vegas Temperatures Rise

As temperatures begin to climb across Las Vegas, simple precautions like staying hydrated, seeking air-conditioned spaces and recognizing signs of heat illness can help keep you and your family safe.

As temperatures begin to climb in Las Vegas, it’s important to take simple steps to stay safe in the heat. Even though summer is still a few months away, warm days are already arriving across the valley, and preparing early can help prevent heat-related illnesses.

When possible, avoid spending long periods outdoors during extreme heat. The safest place to be is in an air-conditioned home. If you do not have air conditioning, consider cooling off at a public location such as a library, movie theater, shopping mall or community center.

If you must be outside, drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid beverages that contain alcohol or caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration. Eating water-rich fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers, iceberg lettuce, watermelon and grapefruit can also help you stay hydrated.

Protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat. Lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing can also help keep your body cooler.

It’s also important to look out for others during periods of high heat. Check on neighbors, family members or friends who may live alone, and never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle. Young children, older adults and pets are especially vulnerable to extreme temperatures.

Knowing the warning signs of heat-related illness can help you act quickly.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion may include:

  • heavy sweating
  • headache
  • nausea
  • flushed skin

Heat stroke is more serious and may cause:

  • hot red skin
  • shallow breathing
  • a rapid, weak pulse

Muscle cramps are often an early sign that the body is overheating.

If you or someone nearby shows signs of heat exhaustion, move to a cooler place immediately. Sip small amounts of water every 15 minutes and loosen or remove tight clothing. If symptoms worsen or you suspect heat stroke, call 911 or seek medical attention right away.
