Ward one is home to the thriving Las Vegas Medical District, historic neighborhoods and businesses, especially in the busy Charleston Boulevard corridor. Much of the Charleston corridor heading west from downtown Las Vegas is included in the city's Redevelopment Area, making it a prime spot for new development and business. The Redevelopment Agency (RDA) was created in 1986 to revitalize downtown Las Vegas and the surrounding commercial districts. The RDA works with developers, property owners and the community to recruit businesses, create new jobs, eliminate blight and diversify the economy.
Roughly bound by Interstate 15, U.S. 95/Interstae 11, Sahara Avenue and Buffalo and Durango drives, Ward 1 is home to the ever-growing Las Vegas Medical District boasting the city’s level one trauma center at University Medical Center. It is also home to the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV. The District is center of medicine in Las Vegas and continued development is resulting in new jobs and academic medicine. New housing and business to support this area is one the horizon.
In addition, Charleston Boulevard is becoming a rapid-transit corridor. The Charleston Heights Arts Center, located at 800 S. Brush St. is a centerpiece of arts and culture in the community and is home to the award-winning Rainbow Co. Youth Theatre ensemble.
Ward 1 is also the home of the Spring Preserve, a 180-acre institution focusing on Las Vegas' origins. It features, trails, museums, public art, botanical gardens and a recreation of an early Las Vegas street and buildings.
