Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman, recognized the winners of the Mayor’s Urban Design Awards on Jan. 31, 2023.

These awards recognize projects that foster the city’s commitment to sustainability and livability. The winners are projects that cultivate walkways and streets that are shared public spaces, promote safety, conserve resources, preserve historic buildings and places, seamlessly link to their surroundings and are pedestrian-friendly.

This year’s winners include:

• The winner in the Building and Environment category is the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV by TSK Architects. This building, located at 625 Shadow Lane, has been a long time coming, but now we see it rise over the Las Vegas Medical District. It is a catalyst and the start of much more new development coming to the medical district. Most importantly, it is the new home for our future doctors.

• The winner in the Historic Preservation and Adaptive Reuse category is Mahoney’s Retail Center, located at 608 S. Maryland Parkway, designed by the Dapper Building Company LLC. Reinventing an existing space is never easy, but the Dapper group is adept at making something that is old new again without compromising on the integrity of the building. That is the case with this space that hosts Tacos el Pastor and the Donut Factory. Yum!

• The winner for our Public Art category is Ardy del Rocio for Our Collective Strength Has No Boundaries, a new mural on the outside of the East Las Vegas Community Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave. What a beautiful sentiment the name of this mural carries. It is fitting because the mural itself is beautiful and you cannot miss it painted on the outside of the center at the corner of Eastern and Stewart avenues. It is especially beautiful when it is lit up at night. The talented artists where outside working hard on this during the summer heat and we thank them for their efforts.

• Our winner in the Public Project category is the Historic Westside Legacy Park, 1600 Mount Mariah Drive. This project is very special, and if you have not been to Legacy Park you should make time to visit. This park celebrates the history of the Westside and those who have made a difference in the community. There is so much history there for all to learn from.
