Ensemble

Ensemble

Alices Wonderland-498.jpg

The core of the Rainbow Company is its ensemble of 40 dedicated students, ages 10 to 18, selected yearly by open auditions. The Rainbow Company Ensemble members work in all aspects of each production. The costumes, make-up, sets, lights, sound and backstage crew responsibilities are all handled by ensemble members under the tutelage of professional directors and designers. Serving as an Ensemble member requires participants to make a serious commitment to learning the art of theatre.

The Student Ensemble program offers professional-level training to young people, ages 10-18, in all areas of theatre. This nationally recognized program is a huge time commitment; but for the serious theatre student, it is ideal. The ensemble is for students who want to learn all aspects of theatre and all students are required to work on all productions, either backstage or on stage.

"Once on This Island"

"Once on This Island"

Rainbow Company Youth Theatre and Broadway in the Hood present “Once on This Island,” produced by a special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI) including authorized performance materials.
Directed by Torrey Russell.
Performances April 29-May 1, and May 5-7, 2023 Auditions Feb. 25, 2023, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., by appointment.

From the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (“Seussical,” “Ragtime”), comes the Olivier Award-winning “Once on This Island.” This highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale, “The Little Mermaid,” garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score. Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, Daniel, with whom she falls in love. Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the pompous gods who preside over the island make a bet with one another over which is stronger, love or death, the stakes being Ti Moune's life. When she pursues Daniel, who has returned to his people, Ti Moune is shunned because of her lowly status. Her determination and capacity to love, though, is not enough to win Daniel's heart, and Ti Moune pays the ultimate price. But the gods turn Ti Moune into a tree that grows so strong and so tall, it breaks the wall that separates the societies and ultimately unites them.
