Las Vegas Days (Formerly Helldorado Days) originally began in 1934 as a rowdy affair to bring in some money and allow the Hoover Dam workers to blow off some steam. By the following year Nevada was a booming town with Freemont Street filled with saloons, gambling halls, hotels, shops and restaurants. With fear of the boom ending and Las Vegas becoming a ghost town, Elks Lodge No. 1468 joined forces with the chamber of commerce and local businesses to create the more family friendly rodeo event and parade we know of today. A festival with such a rich history comes with many stories and images throughout the years. To commemorate Las Vegas days, The City of Las Vegas has asked local photographers to reflect on images of the past and reinterpret them through their own lenses of today. These artists have shown the growth and change that Las Vegas has seen the last 88 years while still keeping the traditions alive.
